Weekly Word

I wish our board were more consistent in its policies; it operates according to some esoteric logic that baffles me.

esoteric: understood by only a particular group; confined to a small group

For example: “The Mississippi’s west bank is more than a landform covered with vegetation. It is communal life expressed in a language more esoteric than Sanskrit. I have learned some of its alphabet, and although the words elude me, one message always comes through and it is this: There is a cyclic unity in all things.”

– Gil Quaal, “Voices for the land: Mississippi River – The West Bank” (Minneapolis Star Tribune, November 12, 2000)
